The Bank of Scotland was founded by an act of parliament in Scotland in 1695. It is the only bank to have been established in thsi way and it was formed to aid trade between England and Scotland. It began trading in 1696 from a base of 172 shareholders from the elite of Scottish society, politics and successful merchants. To help with the ties it looked to make in Engalnd 36 of these shareholders were based in London.

In May 2001 the Bank of Scotland and Halifax announced that they would merge and this was completed before the year end. The new group is now known as HBOS and it was felt that with the combination of two massive financial powers that they could now challenge the 'Big 4' clearing banks. With their joint customer base and heavy marketiing over the last few years they have become one of the leading providers of financial products in the UK including insurance much through another of their companies Churchill, banking, loans, credit cards and mortgages through their own brands and also those of B Mid - Birmingham Midshires another company owned by the HBOS group.
