Barclays Bank
Mortgage Providers
Barclays bank dates back to the 17th century when they provided funds to royalty and merchants. The name Barclay came about when James Barclay became a partner for the bank in 1736.
Business was good for Barclays and it was known for keeping gold deposits fot its customers and lending to credit worthy merchant traders. Twenty of these merchants then formed a new bank Barclay and Partners in 1896 and since many of the new partners were quakers it was for some time known as the Quaker Bank.
The banks main concentration of branches was in the East and South East of England. It had 182 branches but looked to expand by taking over other banks with strong footholds in other areas of England including Bolithos Bank in Cornwall, South West Bank and United Counties Bank giving Barclays strengths in the South West and Midlands.
Barclays became one of the UK's top 5 banks in 1918 when it merged with the London, Provincial and South Western Bank, Barclays continued with its takeover of other banks and in 1969 acquired Martins Bank.
Barclays was the first bank to issue credit cards in 1969, the first to have a website in 1995 and the first to introduce a drive thru cash machine ATM in 1998.
In 1981 filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission to raise additional finance in the US. In 2000 in keeping with its continuing efforts to remain one of the UK's top 4 banks it aquired the Woolwich Building Society.
