This building society was founded in the mid 1850s and had the title The Staffordshire Potteries Economic Permanent Benefit Building Society. It's name was shortened in 1930 when it became the Hanley Economic Building Society.

The Furness building society is collectively owned and as such it is run for the benefit of its customers/members it is still located in the community and takes pride in taking part in the community where its customers live.
